Privacy Policy

This policy explains how VerifyIt handles information when you use our browser extension, website, and fact-checking service.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the VerifyIt browser extension and the VerifyIt service operated through verifyit.app and its subdomains. By using VerifyIt, you acknowledge the practices described below.

2. Information we process

  • Content you ask us to check. We process text you select or submit. When you enable auto-scan, the extension also processes readable paragraphs from the webpage to identify claims that may benefit from verification.
  • Fact-check results and feedback. We process generated verdicts, evidence, source links, ratings, and optional feedback you provide.
  • Anonymous installation information. The extension creates a random installation identifier and stores a signed authorization token. This does not contain your name, email address, or Google account information.
  • Technical information. Our hosting and service providers may process IP addresses, request timestamps, error details, device or browser information, and usage metadata needed to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service.

3. How we use information

We use information only to:

  • perform the fact check or page scan you request;
  • retrieve and analyze relevant public sources;
  • display, recover, and share fact-check results;
  • record feedback and improve service quality;
  • detect abuse, enforce usage limits, and maintain security;
  • diagnose errors and monitor service reliability.

4. Service providers

VerifyIt sends information only to providers needed to deliver the service. Depending on the feature and deployment configuration, these may include:

  • OpenAI, Amazon Web Services Bedrock, or another configured language-model provider for claim extraction and analysis;
  • Tavily for web search and evidence retrieval;
  • Jina AI for reading source pages during deeper analysis;
  • Langfuse for optional tracing and service diagnostics;
  • Railway and related infrastructure providers for hosting.

These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not permit them to use VerifyIt data for advertising on our behalf.

5. Storage and retention

  • Extension preferences, recent state, the installation identifier, and authorization token remain in your browser until you clear extension data or uninstall VerifyIt.
  • Anonymous authorization tokens expire after 90 days and are replaced automatically when needed.
  • Operational logs and traces are retained for up to 30 days where VerifyIt controls the retention setting, unless they are needed longer for security, fraud investigation, or legal compliance.
  • Saved fact-check results and feedback may be retained until they are removed from the service or you request deletion.
  • Third-party providers may retain information according to their own documented retention and legal obligations.

6. Sharing and public links

We do not sell personal information. We share information with the service providers described above only as needed to operate VerifyIt, comply with law, protect users, or defend the service.

A saved fact-check link can be opened by anyone who has the link. Do not submit confidential, sensitive, or identifying information that you do not want included in a fact-check result.

7. Security

VerifyIt transmits service requests over HTTPS and uses signed authorization tokens to protect API access. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we apply reasonable technical and organizational measures appropriate to the service.

8. Your choices and deletion requests

  • Auto-scan is disabled by default and can be changed in the extension.
  • You can clear locally stored data through your browser or uninstall VerifyIt.
  • You can request access to or deletion of server-stored data by emailing contact@verifyit.app. Include any relevant shared-result link so we can locate the data.

9. Children’s privacy

VerifyIt is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Contact us if you believe a child has provided personal information through the service.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as VerifyIt changes. We will post the revised policy here and update the effective date. Material changes will be disclosed as required by applicable law and Chrome Web Store policies.
